Downhole Pressure and Temperature Sensors

Downhole Pressure and Temperature Sensors are the only choice for measuring these essential parameters over long distances at high temperature.

Conventional electrical sensors, including recently commercialized quartz pressure sensors, cannot operate above 200C. High operating temperature is required for advanced heavy oil recovery such as SAGD (Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage) process. Originally developed and widely used in Canada, SAGD process is spreading now over the world to be used in Venezuela, Brazil, China, Russia and Arabic countries where heavy oil is liquidized by injected steam.

Photon patented technology is based on white-light interferometry on which a tiny displacement of two parallel surfaces (a Fabry-Perot gap) is measured optically over long distances (regular 5km, extended range up to 20km). The measurement is provided using the proprietary spectral demodulation techniques for which robust industrial fiber optic spectrometers have been developed.

This development itself has lead to commercialization of fiber optic spectrometers as a separate class of Photon analytical products.

Major Oil and Gas companies are investing significant dollars in developing oil sand resources in Northern Alberta. One method that is of particular interest, is a technique referred to as Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD). The temperature and pressure of the steam required to efficiently extract the bitumen, in a SAGD process, are considerable. The temperature can be as high as 300C with pressures reaching 7500 kPa. The ability to accurately measure these process variables during production is extremely important for process optimization and can help reduce costs.

Traditional temperature pressure sensors are prone to failure as a result of material limitations and high levels of thermally induced noise.

SAGD Equipment Manufacturer

Photon Control manufacturers Downhole Pressure and Temperature Sensors designed to meet the demanding needs of the SAGD process. The sensing elements are hermetically sealed within a stainless steel probe and are resistant to Hydrogen attack. The probe is connected to the interface electronics with optical fibres, housed within a stainless steel cable. The cable can be up to 5000 m in length.

Downhole Sensor Highlights:

  • Designed for SAGD operations
  • High pressure and temperature range
  • Hydrogen resistant design
  • Scaleable for multi-point measurement applications
  • Available up to 5000 m in length
  • High accuracy
